Handgun found in schoolyard near area PM visits
RAVEENA AULAKH, Globe and Mail, 12 January 2007

A handgun found by children in the playground of a downtown elementary school yesterday left parents horrified, school authorities unsettled and added drama to the search for a gunman in an area where Prime Minister Stephen Harper was due to visit later in the day.

Police would not say whether the gun, found near a slide by a group of Orde Street Public School pupils during morning recess, was loaded or not. The school is near College and McCaul Streets.

"Everything is okay, the kids are fine," principal Darryl Chiang said.

Police said the incident began at about 4:40 a.m. yesterday when two plainclothes officers approached two men in a car at Queen Street West and McCaul Street.

"He was arrested and ammunition was found in the car," Constable Christine Bacharach said.

Other officers began combing the area on foot for the gunman. News reports suggested that the Hospital for Sick Children, where Prime Minister Harper and Health Minister Tony Clement made an announcement later yesterday, was sealed off, although police could not confirm that.

A police officer at the school said the suspect was reportedly spotted in the area as late as 10 a.m.

By 11 a.m. the area was swarming with police, with numerous officers from the Toronto Police Service and the RCMP along University Avenue and in the area of Sick Kids, as well as officers scouring the neighbourhood.
